Because most public schools don't provide classical dance training, we decided to teach students beginner's classical ballet. Through the therapeutic effects of dance, they feel empowered and can begin to address trauma and build trust in themselves.

As always, the children did not fail to amaze us! For this cycle, we branched out of our usual classical ballet lessons and invited our friend Dias Konysbayev to teach them hip hop! This was a welcome surprise for the kids as it allowed them to try out another style of dance. Although both styles are completely different, the children were still able to transfer some of the skills they learned from ballet to learning hip hop. In the end, the final performance that we taught them was a simple modern/contemporary style dance that combined elements of both ballet and hip hop.

DZMM on Wheels: Jose Fabella Memorial School Cycle 5 (09.09.17)
It was an honour to be invited to the ABSCBN TLC project DZMM on Wheels! Many organizations were invited to teach and interact with the students at Jose Fabella Memorial School. Because ballet is not taught in public schools across the Philippines, the children were so excited to try it out! Their enthusiasm for ballet was contagious, and although this was only a one-day cycle, they were able to learn a lot.

In this three week cycle, the kids levelled-up! New members were able to join this cycle and those who have been attending the previous workshops were able to get introduced to new and more complicated steps. The children learned how to stretch at home everyday in order to improve their flexibility, and everybody seemed determined to learn how to split! Overall, their technique has improved and they were able to keep up with more complicated choreography as they were able to remember different changes in formations.
Parents, teachers, family, guardians and friends of the performers were there in full force!
You could see a big difference in their attitude—improved self-esteem and confidence! A big feat considering the hardships and trauma several of them have endured.
This third cycle was held in a different location, which was in a center for young girls who were previously sexually abused.
We started off with the basic foundations of ballet, and throughout the workshops, a change in the children’s expression was evident as they all became happier and more enthusiastic. Some of the older girls saw the ongoing workshops and wanted to join as well so during some spare time, they were able to a mini lesson on the different ballet positions!
We ended this cycle yet again with a performance to a group of older members in the center, and everyone was very excited to see what we were able to come up with :)

During our second Classikids cycle, we were able to give more focus on the children’s technique and we reviewed the exercises that they learned during the first cycle. This time, we were also able to have a little fun by adding more jumps and leaps!
We ended this module with a little party which started off with the children performed another piece that was choreographed from them, and then ended with performances from everybody including the teachers :D
